The Message / James 3:3-6

3-5 A bit in the mouth of a horse controls the whole horse. A small rudder on a huge ship in the hands of a skilled captain sets a course in the face of the strongest winds. A word out of your mouth may seem of no account, but it can accomplish nearly anything—or destroy it!

You may think you wield no power whatsoever but whatever you speak makes an impact on those around you. Even when your declaring things out loud on your own it creates a shift. The question is do you want to make a positive shift or a negative one? When I speak words of encouragement over someone even speaking scripture over them I see something changes in their demeanor.

5-6 It only takes a spark, remember, to set off a forest fire. A careless or wrongly placed word out of your mouth can do that. By our speech, we can ruin the world, turn harmony to chaos, throw mud on a reputation, send the whole world up in smoke and go up in smoke with it, smoke right from the pit of hell.

My mom used to say only speak what you want to see come to pass. Very early on in her life she realized the power that words can have. When we would say "I am sick!" she would tell us to watch what we are saying. She would ask us " Do you want to be sick?" and of course we would tell her no. She would say "Speak what you want." She would give us verses to declare over ourselves. We tend to curse others or ourselves without even realizing it. Pay close attention to what you are saying in a day. You begin to realize why you feel weak and defeated or why you feel ready to kick satans face in.

Proverbs 18:21 puts it this way: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” The stakes are high. Your words can either speak life, or your words can speak death. Our tongues can build others up, or they can tear them down. An unchecked fire doubles in size every minute. https://www.viannews.com/commentary/tongue-has-power-life-and-death#:~:text=Proverbs%2018%3A21%20puts%20it,doubles%20in%20size% 20every%20minute.

What are you adding to your fire are you keeping it in check?
Are we taming our tongue?
